Are you working long hours, giving up weekends or bank holidays, or taking your laptop on holiday because there always seems to be something else that needs doing — or you’re afraid you might miss something?
Perhaps you’ve backed out of family commitments or social plans because you’re trying to keep up with work. Maybe you’ve missed training that could give you the skills and knowledge to grow your business or provide better support to your existing clients. And even when you do take time off, do you find yourself thinking about everything that still needs doing?
Running a business shouldn’t mean that work takes over your entire life.
Good work-life balance doesn’t necessarily mean working fewer hours. It means having enough structure, support and control over your workload to give yourself time away from the business without feeling that everything will fall behind.
Recognise When Work Is Taking Over
Working longer hours can feel like the only way to keep up, particularly when you’re responsible for running the business and making the decisions. But if evenings, weekends and holidays are regularly being taken up by work, it’s worth asking why.
Are you holding on to tasks that someone else could handle? Perhaps important projects keep getting pushed aside because day-to-day demands take priority. You may also be spending too much time dealing with administration and operational tasks rather than focusing on the areas where you add the most value.
Recognising where your time is going is the first step towards creating more balance.
Use Your Time Where It Matters Most
You can’t give your full attention to everything all of the time. Most people have periods during the day when they are more focused and productive. For many, this is in the morning. Use that time for your most challenging or important work rather than letting it disappear into emails, administration or meetings.
Your diary should be more than a record of appointments. It should be a tool for organising your time and protecting the things that matter. Block out important work, allow some flexibility for unexpected demands and make sure you leave time to step away from your desk.
Learn to Switch Off
Taking time away from work can be difficult when you’re responsible for the business. You might take Saturday off but still feel guilty about everything you’re not doing. You might spend time with your family while thinking about the emails waiting for you. Or you might go on holiday but spend more time looking at your mobile than enjoying the pool.
If that sounds familiar, ask yourself whether the business genuinely needs you to be available — or whether you’ve simply become used to it.
Setting clear boundaries around your working time can help. So can planning, delegating and following up important tasks rather than relying on you to keep everything in your head.
Don't Try to Do Everything Yourself
One of the biggest barriers to work-life balance is trying to carry too much yourself.
There will always be tasks that need attention, but you don’t have to handle them all yourself. Routine administration, project coordination, operational tasks and other responsibilities can take up a significant amount of time.
Delegating the right work can create valuable capacity. You might delegate to someone within your team or an experienced external business support professional. This allows you to focus on the areas where your experience and expertise add the greatest value.
Sometimes the answer isn’t better time management. It’s having the right support around you.
Make Time to Work On Your Business
It’s difficult to grow a business when you’re constantly caught up in running it. You need time to review how things are working, improve processes, develop your skills, plan for the future and think about how you can continue to support your clients.
That might mean protecting time in your diary for strategic thinking, making time for training or finally getting around to the project you’ve been putting off.
Investing time in yourself and your business isn’t time away from the business. It’s part of building a business that works for you.
A Better Balance Starts with Your Time
Work-life balance doesn’t mean having a perfectly balanced day every day. There will always be busy periods, unexpected problems and times when work needs extra attention. The important thing is making sure those periods don’t become your normal way of working.
If you’re regularly working evenings and weekends, struggling to switch off or finding there simply aren’t enough hours in the day, it may be time to look at where your time is going and what support you need.
You shouldn’t have to choose between running a successful business and having a life outside of it.
